Carve Out Your Space

I’m fortunate to feel blissfully at home in some very different places.

While Chicago might be my home base, I’ve been fortunate enough to spend many summers on the shores of Green Lake in Wisconsin and many winters in Punta Mita, Mexico. Mexico is where I fell in love with the uncomfortable fun of kayaking, and it has some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet.

Spending lengths of time in these places over the years has helped me confirm a collective truth  – a change in scenery is good for the soul.

I was reminded of this recently while in one of my other favorite places, the Florida Atlantic coast. Much of our family lives in Florida, and it is the home of SipTequila.com, so I try to get there as much as I can.

Starting my morning on the beach gives a subtle glimmer to my otherwise mundane morning routine. My 5 am alarm becomes a privilege, rather than an obstacle, because my solo time on the beach is sacred.

Sunrise is my time to reflect. It’s the perfect setting — an empty expanse of sand and the surf’s soundtrack, combined with my sidekick Winston of Winnetka who loves nothing more than a game of fetch in the water and along the shoreline. This morning routine gives me space and time that’s hard to find once the world is awake.

Consider this blog a reminder that wherever you are, carve out your own space to re-energize. You deserve it.
